Depressing, isn’t it.
This reminds me of when my mother was engaged to my stepfather, in the first year they were together. My aunt bought them a gazebo for the garden (and if you know Stoppard’s “Arcadia”, that brings up instant associations), a black metal affair with four sides and a top. Stepdad and I spent ages getting it put up one evening, and I got up early the next morning and spent two hours getting the four sides angled just right so that they were evenly spaced and gave a nice view of the apple trees. My mother came down, sat down in the gazebo, and enquired, “Will the neighbours be able to see us canoodling from here?” They’ve been together ten years now, and at 65 and 75 are still ridiculously cutesy-couply. And yay for them. Though thankfully they don’t embarrass me *too* often by canoodling in front of me…
